  • How long does a fire investigation take?

A fire investigation can take anything from a few days to a many years, depending on the size of the fire, what is left after the fire, the loss of life or property, and if the case goes to trail. However, all fire investigations follow a similar pattern of recognizing the need to identify what factors contributed to the loss and identifying the problem, collecting facts and data, analyzing the data, developing hypotheses, testing hypotheses, and selecting final hypotheses that are the basis of conclusions.

  • What do fire investigators do?

Once Fire Investigator Safety Consultants are retained on a case, we start collecting facts, data, and information related to the loss. The initial process can be as simple as reviewing fire department reports, fire alarm monitoring signals, fire protection systems maintenance, and test records. The volume of information can be overwhelming for significant loss cases if not handled within a well-established process. Reading through depositions and documenting all of the relevant case facts are all part of the collecting data phase, which is then used to develop and test the hypothesis of what went wrong that contributed to the loss. Opinions are then formed to be presented as part of the process to settle the case or used as the basis of expert testimony if the case goes to trial.

  • What are the main causes of fire losses?

Most fires should be detected by fire alarms or fire and life safety systems where they are installed. Where water-based fire sprinkler systems or other fire suppression systems such as clean agents or carbon dioxide, the fire protection system should confine the fire to the area of origin. It's critical to investigate the causes of fire protection system failures to determine what went wrong to allow the fire to develop past the incipient stage and create the loss.

Some of the common findings that Fire Safety Consultants has determined to contribute to the loss include.

    • Sprinkler valves were found to be shut at the time of the fire.
    • The fire alarm system did not activate.
    • The fire alarm monitoring company did not receive the alarm.
    • The fire damaged the system wiring disabling the alarm system.
    • The fire alarm and protection systems were not maintained as required by NFPA-72, The National Fire Alarm, and Signaling Code, and NFPA-25 Inspection and Testing of Water-Based Fire Protection Systems
